PROFESSIONAL TRAINING: MODULE 9 LEARN HOW TO HAND SEW LEATHER GOODS: INTRODUCTION TO PATTERN MAKING, SADDLE STITCHING AND CONSTRUCTION TECHNIQUES This is the ninth module of a series designed to provide thorough, professional training in leatherworking, pattern making, and accessory making. Each module has been carefully designed to equip individuals with key skills for starting a career in this sector, broadening their industry knowledge, or embarking on their own journey with solid foundational skills. During this lesson, you will learn how to proficiently hand sew leather, handle a variety of essential hand tools, distinguish leather types and understand their suitability for specific projects and techniques. You will receive an overview of pattern making for hand-sewn leather goods and why it differs from other kinds of pattern making. You will gain insights into the technical aspects of leatherworking, including leather preparation, marking, cutting, gluing, punching, edging and more. Throughout the class, theoretical lessons and practical exercises will alternate, allowing you to create personalised samples to take with you for your own reference. You will receive valuable handouts and curated lists of leather and tool suppliers for ongoing reference. SUMMARY OF TOPICS COVERED DURING THE CLASS: – Overview on leather types, tanning, finishings and best uses – Hand sewing / saddle stitching – Leather preparation, pattern placement, leather marking and leather cutting – Leather beveling and burnishing – Pattern making principles for hand sewn goods BY THE END OF THE TUITION, YOU WILL HAVE: – Learned to hand sew leather / saddle stitch leather and construct some three-dimensional shapes – Understood the proper use of hand tools related to hand sewing leather, as well as needle and thread types – Gained an understanding of leather types and the ability to select the correct material for your project – Worked with a variety of tools and various leathers, creating a catalogue of samples to take home – Developed confidence in utilising a wide range of specific tools for leather preparation, marking, finishing, cutting, and more – Understood the different methods of creating patterns for hand-sewn items compared to pattern making for other types of goods This tuition will require up to 7 hours to complete. We aim to provide customised and high-quality tuition services, and by limiting the class size to 6 students, we can focus on each participant’s needs. Depending on the number of attendees, the ability of participants and the group’s pace, the syllabus may be covered in a shorter time frame. For example, in the case of three attendees, the programme could be covered in approximately 5 hours.
