Exploration into Pure Form, a four day woodcarving course in Devon
Description
My artistic practice is inspired by the manifold forms of nature in animals, plants, minerals, water and landscapes. Observing the natural forms closely leads us to the essence of form, especially the basic elements of concave and convex. The five day course offers the opportunity to observe natural forms and carve an abstract or, as I would call it, a pure form, of your own design. The course is suitable for adults and teenagers with all levels of experience. With a maximum group-size of three I can support each person as needed. With Dartmoor a short drive from Buckfastleigh and the South Devon coast within a 45 min drive away the 3pm finish every day leaves time for independent exploration in the afternoon. I know the area well and can give advise on walks and places of interest. After a walk in nature, returning to your carving the next morning, you see your work anew and this helps to find a way forward. Every day we will finish the day's carving at 3pm to allow time for independent nature observation, sketching, a walk drive to the coast. I know the area well and can recommend walks and places of interest. Returning to your carving after a walk in nature enables you to see your work anew and often helps to find a new way forward.

With over 20 years of teaching experience I love sharing my skills and learn from my students. My own artistic work is inspired by the ever-changing and evolving forms in nature and the seasons. Animals and the development of plant forms, are a constant inspiration for me. Working wood with traditional hand tools and techniques is a very rewarding experience. Each piece of wood is different and carving is an inspiring conversation with a unique piece of living material.
