Ceramics: Corners of my World

X

Description

Each and everyday we experience objects, things, way of living over and over again until they become a part of our life, our identity. To me, these become personal corners of our lives. Like that pretty postcard stuck on the refrigerator from a loved one on a holiday in a far flung exotic land. The picture becomes a special memory associated with that person. Corners of my world is about coaxing that memory, that one special experience or even a favourite bird or animal into existence through surface design. A participant can bring images, pictures, printouts or drawings of their one such inspiration and together we will translate it into a surface design on a clay object. Surface design in pottery: No matter what material an object is made of, its visual appeal lies in its surface treatment. It leaves an impression while telling a story. Ceramics has its fair share of various surface design techniques, from bright colours to muted glazes, from hand painting to decal prints. Lot of times, the clay itself is designed as a surface decoration. As a professional Ceramic designer/maker, I have explored various surface techniques. In my current collection I use intricate fine lines in minimalist monotone to develop Sgrafitto on the surface. Sgrafitto comes from Italian word “Sgraffiare” which means to scratch away the surface to reveal the base layer. This workshop is centred around exploring Sgrafitto beyond its traditional form. What’s covered: Introduction to the techniques and skills. Applying coloured slip on the base. Discussing the proposed design for development. Transferring the design on a tracing sheet or on a paper or freehand drawing directly onto the clay surface. Transfer the design on the surface of the pottery supplied. Start Sgrafitto combined with slip painting for creating depth on the surface. Your pieces will be taken away for firing in a kiln and will be returned to Micklems Farm for you to collect after the course. What to bring: Old clothes / apron A packed lunch
