Description
Join Giles for a one day woodcarving workshop in his purpose built indoor / outdoor studio space in the Lancashire countryside. Share his sources of inspiration, his tools and his wood in a small carving group of up to only four people. During this workshop you will learn how to carve your own beautiful wooden pendant with the simple and adaptable knife techniques that Giles has developed. Ideal for both newcomers to woodcarving and experienced woodcarvers, the course focuses on giving you the skills to start and continue a project to create your own unique piece of wearable wood art with nothing more than a knife and a little imagination. An infinitely portable and transferable skill set (and toolkit) that will give you the freedom to carve creatively, whether at home or out in the wilderness. Encompassing the whole process of art woodcarving from sustainable wood selection and design principles to knife work, detailing and finishing you will gain a strong foundation of knowledge and insight into this traditional creative craft; a set of skills that you can easily adapt to carve almost anything. With a strong focus on Giles' principles of working in harmony with, and understanding the characteristics of the wood, participants of this workshop will learn to read the wood and allow its unique features to guide the design and carving process to create truly one-of-a-kind pieces of jewellery from even the most unlikely pieces of wood. The workshop is suitable for all levels of experience* from newcomers to carving looking for an introduction to the artform as well as for those with experience of carving by knife already who wish to learn detail and decorative knife work techniques. Knives and wood will be provided. Places on this workshop are limited to 4 to ensure you get the most out of your day. *Participants must be aged 16 or over and under 18’s will need to be accompanied by an appropriate, paying parent or guardian.

Maker
Giles is a self taught artist and woodcarver. He works with naturally fallen timber that he finds in the woods and primarily carves using just an axe and a knife. Taking up woodcarving in 2015 whist managing a small family owned woodland in Snowdonia, Giles eventually gave up his day job as a Designer and Photographer in early 2016 to pursue his passion for carving full time. Based in Lancashire, his highly sort after work sells world wide and he teaches carving skills internationally and throughout the UK.
