Weekly handbuilding pottery classes

Sally Mareike's handbuilding courses are suitable for beginners and people who would like to refresh their skills. No experience is necessary, just a willingness to allow your natural (perhaps hidden) creativity to flow! Sally is an experienced hand-building potter and teacher of adults and children. (DBS checked) During the 6 week course of 2 hour classes, on Tuesday or Saturday mornings, Sally will demonstrate the basics of handbuilding techniques, including slab building, coiling and pinch pots. Decorative techniques such as incising, impressing and applying sprigs, as well as slip, oxide decorations and glazing will also be shown. Using what you’ve learned, you will then be gently guided and supported to create your own beautiful pots using some of these techniques. You can expect to have a lot of fun and feel very calm when connecting with the clay. Over the course, you might make and glaze three or four pieces, such as mugs, vases, candle holders, vessels, simple sculptures or bowls. Make sure you wear clothes and shoes that you don't mind getting dirty. Bring several warm layers in winter as the studio can vary in temperature. Full payment is due on booking. Fees are non refundable within 14 days of the course unless the place can be filled. If you can’t manage the dates advertised please do get in touch, as there may be dates available to suit your needs. Sally also runs birthday parties, family workshops and special events and content can be adjusted to fit the occasion.
