Description
Spend a few peaceful hours relaxing and learning a new skill; weaving a piece of textile artwork. Royal College of Art trained Karina Thomas will start by showing you examples of woven work as inspiration for future development. Enjoy learning to weave on a tapestry loom. We will explore yarn colours and textures and relax in the creative hub of this class. You will be guided through the techniques and processes in order to come away with your own textural wall hanging. During the class you will learn how to: - Warp up your loom and start to introduce weft yarn using simple plain weave. - Change weft colours and make Rya knots to create a three dimensional textural effect. - Introduce motifs into your weave. - Use finishing techniques for removing the weave from the frame. This class is suitable for beginners. You will come away with your own woven wall art and instruction sheets to help you continue your weaving.

Black Swans Studio is a multi discipline art and design studio set in the Buckinghamshire countryside. Created by Karina Thomas and Lisa Vaughan, who met whilst studying textiles at The Royal College of Art, to share teaching skills and experience from their design backgrounds. Come and join the workshops here and enjoy this inspiring design space; a place of learning and retreat. Monthly classes are presently run in stitch and weave with other workshops planned from guest designers to offer a creative mix of craft and design courses. Our studio is based in the cow shed, one of a series of converted farm buildings at Culverton Farm. This area of Buckinghamshire has historically been linked to the crafts industry. Wood turners, bodgers and furniture makers, lace and needle makers. As you travel around the hills and valleys of the county, wardrobe lane and needle makers house are evidence of this past craft lineage. Our workshops reflect this rich cultural history and aim to keep people connected to these skillfull craft traditions.
