The bees in your garden - A bee experience
Description
An informal afternoon learning all about the bees in your garden and beyond. Take a look in a working beehive. Find out about the different bees that visit our gardens, from bumblebees to honey bees, and hear all about a beekeepers year, from how they look after the hives, and harvest the honey. Programme: We start with a general introduction to the bees in your garden. The different types of bees that visit and how you can help and encourage bees into your gardens. We then take a closer look at the honey bee, discussing how the honey bee colony lives and their needs and threats. It's then time to pop on a bee suit and take a closer look for yourself: in this guided inspection you will see how the bees build the comb, where the queen lays her eggs and where the honey is stored. See if you can identify the queen bee, workers and drones! After afternoon tea and cake (honey cake of course!) learn about a beekeeper's year, the tasks and activities carried out in each season, and sample different honeys. We are fortunate to be joined by Sheila Fellows-Turnbull, the Chair of our local Beekeeping Association, who shares her experience and knowledge of bees. There are over 270 bee species in the UK and all are pollinators, but they are in decline, facing many threats. Fortunately, there is much that can be done to benefit bees and it is entirely possible for individuals to greatly help, including planting bee-friendly plants in your garden and supporting local, responsible beekeepers. What to bring: Bring yourself, confirmation of your booking, a notebook, and any questions you may have.
