Stained glass for beginners - two day workshop

X

Description

UPDATE I've had to really cut my classes down this year as I have been studying and working on some huge commissions! However, I have managed to squeeze in a few Summer Courses teaching leadlight - only six spaces available this year and they book up fast, so if you would like to come along book your space as soon as possible. This two-day comprehensive workshop will teach you the ancient art of stained glass. Using traditional methods and materials, Jan will show you how to understand the techniques used to construct a small stained glass window. All materials and safety equipment are included within the cost with no hidden extras. With only two to a class you can relax in the knowledge that you will have plenty of guidance from your tutor as you work on your piece. You will use a selection of patterned, coloured and textured glass to produce a 28 x 28 cm piece of stained glass art. During the course, we will work together, using a selection of designs supplied by the studio, through the processes of glass cutting, leading, soldering and cementing techniques. We will also discuss how to visualise, measure up and draw your own future designs. My studio is set in a beautiful, purpose built building, set in lovely surroundings, near the Sussex Coast. We are easily accessible by Train and approximately 7 minutes from the Chichester Bypass Road. Your tutor, Jan, has worked with both stained and fused glass for more than 25 years. She has recently completed constructing and designing, with the help a small team, a series of large ecclesiastical commissions, including three stained glass windows for St Francis of Assisi's Roman Catholic Church in Ascot, depicting the life of various Catholic Saints. She has been teaching Leaded Light for over 20 years at Adult Education Level in both Sussex and Hampshire, and will offer additional private tuition days and more advanced one on one courses by arrangement. Please note, if you have any disability or mobility issues please do inform me on booking so that I can ensure that I can prepare the studio accordingly to suit you. Due to the nature of working with glass I do need to be comfortable that I can accommodate any extra needs you may have and make any necessary adjustments in order to make sure that the environment is safe and comfortable for you to work in. We will be spending a lot of time on our feet so you need to be standing for long periods.

What's included in the price?

I supply all tools, materials, gloves and safety equipment required and a steady stream of tea, coffee, cake and fruit is on hand throughout the day. Please bring a packed lunch. Fridge storage and a microwave can be provided. In the summer months, lunch can be eaten in the garden, and during the winter, I have a dining area inside for you to use. Please wear comfortable clothing with layers and flat, covered, sturdy shoes. Because we are handling lead, this course is not suitable if you are pregnant or breastfeeding. We have adjustable chairs available in the studio but you will likely be spending quite a bit of time on your feet.

Update: Due to current commissions and my own study commitments I am not currently offering courses between November 2024 and May 2025. Jan has been working in stained and fused glass for over 25 years and is widely experienced in both skills. She has installed a series of Stained Glass Windows at St Frances of Assisi Church, in Ascot and has worked on many other large scale installations. Over the last 15 years she has been a regular exhibitor at major shows and Christmas events throughout the UK at the same time as running regular classes in leadlight and fusing techniques. Jan is currently working on a commission only basis whilst she formally completes her Bachelors degree in Glass and Ceramics and is offering a limited number of classes in both fusing and traditional leadlight throughout 2024. Classes are kept small and personal and allow you plenty of time to ask questions and discuss your projects and ideas and she does offer the opportunity to come back and do further one to one tuition if you find you "get the bug" for this fascinating craft.

FAQs

Yes, I offer ongoing mentoring classes to those who wish to develop further, whether you are thinking of setting up a studio, or want to learn different processes, these classes are personalised to your own needs and generally are on a one to one basis, although sometimes I may team you up with someone who is at a similar stage or who will work independently alongside you on the day.

On the fusing course, you would expect to make a piece about 20 x 20 cm in size or a number of smaller pieces - I will help and guide you through the process to ensure that you make something lovely. On the stained glass course you will have a choice of two or three designs - this is to ensure that you understand the process before you tackle the issue of designing something of your own.

I keep my classes small. Fused classes have no more then three people, and stained glass classes only two people, this way I can provide you with all the attention you need during the day to make sure you make something really lovely.
