Latex Puppet Making Workshop

Description

Join us for a latex puppet making workshop! Over the course of one day you will sculpt a small head in clay (face, ears, neck - not back of head); make a one piece plaster mould of the head then cast latex in the mould. This latex "mask" will be padded out with expanding foam and other air drying materials; be attached to a dowel handle, then painted and "costumed". Other elements can be added (eg, hat, beard, hair etc). Puppet sized hands will be provided. Please note that the emphasis is on creating the latex heard, not on creating a puppet with elaborate movement (eg. a marionette). The latex used is pre vulcanised - not foam. Suitability + Age Range: This course is open to all aged 15+. Space is limited so there is no room for non participating adults (sorry). From an arts and crafts perspective, it is an ideal course for anyone interested in expanding their knowledge of materials and techniques. For teachers and storytellers it is a great way of creating a particular character to bring life to a story. It will also be of interest to anyone who wishes to create a quirky and colourful artifact or gift. Please don't worry about your artistic abilities - you will be provided with all the necessary templates, face formers, mould boxes and every step of the way will be clearly described. Who will be teaching you? Andy Lawrence has been making, designing and performing with puppets for over 30 years with his company, Theatre of Widdershins. Over this period he has taught a variety of arts based subjects to a wide age range and ability range. He studied Theatre Costume Design and Making at Wimbledon School of Art (1983-86). He went on to make props and costumes for many well loved BBC dramas and light entertainment (Red Dwarf; Chronicles of Narnia; Russ Abbott; Little + Large).
