Then some Japanese traditional pattern samples will be provided to get inspired to create a design. There will be some sample blocks on display to get an idea on how the block should be carved and how deep it should be carved. During the workshop, you will learn a step-by-step process for creating a black and white print: how to create registration marks (corner and straight registrations), how to use tools correctly, inking technique by using water based paint and how to use Baren (printing tool) to make a print. As well as producing a print, you will learn about materials such as woods and papers. There are many different woods and papers available in the UK so what to research to pick the one for your needs will be explained. After the workshop, you will gain the basic knowledge of Japanese woodblock printing and can start creating your own block independently.
