Introduction to table loom weaving, Fisherton Mill, Salisbury - Two day workshop
Description
A two day workshop for beginners between 10am - 4pm, in the beautiful setting of Fisherton Mill in Salisbury, Wiltshire. Table Looms are used for weaving finer cloth, i.e., scarves, tea towels, and lengths of fabric for fashion and furnishing. Setting up the loom and weaving on it is a more complex process than frame loom weaving which is why the workshop takes place over two days. WHAT TO EXPECT This is quite an intense workshop and there is a lot to take in over the two days, especially on day one, but everything you learn is supported with a handout of clear notes which is yours to make notes on and take home. DAY ONE: Planning your warp and setting up your loom. The basic principles and terminology of weaving. How to plan and make a warp, wind it onto your loom and thread the loom up. DAY TWO: Patterns and weaving. Looking at and documenting patterns. Lots of weaving! Please be aware that people learn at very different paces, something you find very simple, another might really struggle to understand and vice versa. You will be encouraged to support your fellow group members whilst working at your own pace. It is important that you don't worry about what stage other people are on as this will only hold you back. I will ensure that by the end of the two days you will take home a series of woven samples. There are never more than four people per workshop to ensure you receive as much guidance as you need. This workshop is suitable for complete beginners and for those with a little experience that would like a refresher. Please let us know of any special needs prior to booking so we can discuss all possible options with you. WHAT TO BRING Fisherton Mill has a wonderful cafe where you can purchase your lunch, cakes and drinks, however if you'd prefer to bring a packed lunch, please feel free to do so. PARKING & ARRIVAL Please arrive in good time to ensure you have time to park before the workshop begins. There is no parking for Fisherton Mill but you can find full details on where to park and how to get there on the Fisherton Mill website. The workshop will take place in the gallery upstairs. I like to start promptly as there is quite a lot to go through, but if you do find you are running late, please don't worry, once i've got everyone started off i'll be able to get you up to speed with the rest of the group fairly quickly. I look forward to meeting you soon but if you have any questions beforehand, please feel free to contact me. Maker
ELKA is a weaving and natural dye studio based in Hampshire. Ellie spent a large part of her childhood living abroad and travelling. The vibrant markets of the Middle and Far East triggered her passion for colour, texture and pattern and this influence is expressed through her textiles. She completed both her BA in Textile Design, specialising in woven textiles, and MA in Design for Textile Futures at Central St Martins College of Art and Design, graduating in 2006. After graduating, she moved back to Winchester to set up her weaving business which she has been running full time since 2015. In 2018 Claudia (Ellie's mum) started working with the business to produce naturally dyed yarns for Ellie to weave with, and to sell on our website. If you are too far afield to join us on an in-person workshop, we have a growing range of online self-paced courses which have been designed to get you confidently weaving and natural dyeing from you home.
