Handmade books - Japanese stab bindings - learn four Japanese bookbinding stitches
Description
The Japanese stab binding method dates back to the 16th century and involves binding single sheets of paper with decorative stitches on the left hand side. In this workshop you'll learn four different stitches, which will hopefully inspire you to learn more or even create your own. We'll make four books: • Three will be matching soft cover books, containing eight sheets of white paper. Each will be sewn using a different stitch. • We'll also make a hardcover A5 book, with a hinged spine and covered in paper with a Japanese pattern. This will be sewn using the basic Japanese four hole stitch Yotsume Toji. All materials are provided, as are refreshments. This friendly and informal workshop is ideal if you've attended my handmade books workshop (the basic stitch will be repeated on the hardback book) but is also ideal for beginners. There will be a maximum of four students and you can work at your own pace.

The Leaf Press is the studio name of surface pattern designer and papercut artist Suzy Dobson. I create colourful designs which I sell on stationery, wedding invitations and pictures. The Leaf Press was originally a bookbinding studio but has evolved over the years so that papercut style designs are my speciality. I have been teaching adults since 2009 and am very excited to have started offering workshops in my own studio in 2023. Students have described it as a 'bright, calming space' and with a maximum of 4 students you can be sure of a friendly and relaxed learning experience where you can work at your own pace but receive help when you need it.
