Hand Weaving Summer School - Nottingham Trent University
Description
Immerse yourself in the rhythmic art of hand weaving and unleash your creativity. Whether you’re a total beginner or an experienced weaver looking for a refresh, this summer school will teach you how to design, craft, and create beautiful handwoven fabric on a state-of-the-art ARM Touch 60 Loom. From threading your warp to weaving intricate patterns, you’ll experiment with texture, colour, and yarn to bring your ideas to life. Get hands-on with vibrant fibres, discover the magic of the loom, and craft a tactile masterpiece for interiors, fashion, or even textile art. This course is your chance to learn how to weave with like-minded people whilst creating a stunning finished piece and leaving with the skills to keep weaving. This course will focus on design in woven textiles, and you will learn the fundamentals of weaving, including making a warp and setting up a loom. You will have access to NTU’s extensive yarn store to select and choose from a wide range of fibres to experiment with and make samples. You’ll apply the techniques you have learnt to make woven cloth for interiors/upholstery, for fashion, or to create a contemporary woven textile art piece. During this course, you will: • Explore the basics of hand weaving, from warp to weave. • Dive into the yarn store to handpick fibres that speak to your style. • Design and craft a warp that bursts with your creative vision. • Be introduced to warp making and learn to wind a warp onto a loom. • Thread your loom and weave sample ideas before designing and weaving your final piece. By the end of the course, you’ll walk away with a completed handwoven masterpiece, alongside an exciting new set of weaving skills. You’ll enjoy a mix of group workshops and hands-on one-to-one support, surrounded by colour, texture, and creativity. With yarn in your hands and the rhythmic hum of looms, every moment will feel inspiring; every experience is as tactile as it is transformative. Taylor’s role combines traditional and modern weaving techniques, offering students a well-rounded learning experience. She provides detailed instruction in hand weaving, including loom setup, pattern creation, and various techniques. Taylor also creates her own woven designs, crafting scarves, cushions, and tote bags and you can view her work here.
