Frame basket weaving workshop with Joe Gregory

X

Description

Frame baskets are created all over the world and incorporate a weaving tradition that is much older than many modern baskets. Different materials can be used in their creation and unlike the more complicated modern baskets, once a frame basket has been made, the learner should be able to create more frame baskets on their own. Over this one day course you will learn to weave all the techniques you will need to create your own frame basket. You will have the opportunity to use different willows (there are over 250 different varieties of basketry willow alone) to create a sturdy unique basket. Joe Gregory has been weaving these baskets for many years and will be able to give you advice and tips on how to create functional and also art frame pieces if you wish, and the many different materials available locally to make these baskets with. From a very simple design base there are multiple possibilities with this basketry technique, and Joe will be able to show you examples in her workshop of the many different styles of basket that can be achieved using this ancient technique. Suitable for beginners and those with some weaving experience; a lovely way to spend a day. Come alone and meet other crafty folk or come with a friend or two for a special day together. The Willows tea and coffee house on the ground floor of the building will be open during the course serving rainforest alliance coffee, ethical teas and a selection of cakes and simple savouries.

Maker

Hi my name is Joe Gregory, I’m a willow basket maker, sculptor and teacher. I started weaving as a hobby in 2004 and by 2008, I realised I could make a living doing a craft that I loved. Starting from my kitchen table my skill grew organically alongside my growing children and my work teaching for the Workers Education Association and as a Forest School Leader. Over the years weaving with Willow has provided me with the most rewarding career whilst enabling me to keep my family safe and healthy. From 2014 I made weaving my main profession. I teach sculpture and basket making for a number of larger organisations nationally, occasionally internationally and from my own venue in West Yorkshire. I’ve worked on some amazing projects over the years and feel very lucky to have found this beautiful craft. I am comfortable teaching pretty much anybody from young children to those recovering from serious illness or injury. With the right support I believe weaving is for everyone! My classes are suitable for beginners to more advanced weavers. I’m proud to be able to say a third of my students are returning students. I’ve helped many people on their journey to become professional and serious hobbyists and I’m developing new resources all the time to open up this craft to as many people as I can.
