Description

Fire-craft is likely one of the earliest activities of intentional transformation practiced by different cultures around the world. Whereas we now have the means of lighting fires at the flick of a switch or spark of a match, traditional fire-craft takes skill and, ultimately, mastery. In this workshop you will learn how to make a traditional fire lighting kit, gather suitable tinder and create fire from this timeless technique. We will follow up our kindling activities with an exploration of how this craft can lead us deeper into the realms of nature as well as into our own paths of self enquiry and development. Jonathan is a land-based, practical skills, and integrative educator teaching in a wide variety of contexts. His love of craft was sparked many years ago when he worked with young adults with learning and behavioural needs in practical skills education. Jonathan's current focus is in HE where he leads an Agroecology Programme at the RAU in Cirencester. Jonathan is author of Muck and Mind: Encountering Biodynamic Agriculture, is editor of Crafting: Transforming Materials and the Maker and is in the process of writing a book on kindling in educational purpose and practice.
