Description

Two day course covering the technique of cutting dovetail joints and also making a dovetail alignment board. The dovetail joint is closely linked with the development of the role of specialist cabinet maker in England, in the mid 1600s. Examples of dovetails and variants have been found back much further, including in Ancient Egypt. This course is an opportunity to break down the process, look at tool options, nuance of process, develop dexterity and to hone your skills. You will then make a dovetail alignment board to take away and use in your own workshop. You will have ideally attended the "Introduction to Woodworking" day or have some woodwork experience. You are wanting to immerse yourself in traditional hand tool woodworking, to learn or improve your dovetailing technique. This is an intermediate course, but I will always consider beginners, so please contact me via the 'message the tutor' button with any questions. I also run an introduction day, which would prepare a beginner for this course. This is really getting back to traditional woodwork and joinery skills, using hand tools only. The joy of using hand tools and feeling your skills develop is so rewarding. Time permitting, there is also plenty of talk about tools, pros and cons, and often you can try alternatives. The workshop is well equipped with a variety a quality tools. Small groups of 3-5 people allows for more instruction and focus on technique and knowledge.

Maker

I am a qualified & accredited cabinet maker and furniture restorer. I have a passion for traditional crafts and teach various aspects of making & restoring. I also write for woodwork magazine 'Quercus' and for 'Woodland Heritage'. I feel that our health & quality of life is enhanced by working practically, making and learning new skills. At a time in society, when consumerism has taken hold, we throw too many things away and do not appreciate materials or nature. We must make better and restore more. We need more relaxing workbench time and less screen time!
