Have you thought about further studies in creative writing, but you're not sure whether it’s for you, or where to start? Does the thought of undergraduate or postgraduate studies excite you, but you need guidance with regards to what admissions tutors are looking for in your work? This lively, energetic weekend programme will help you create a portfolio of new creative writing in a variety of genres, led by the superb writer-tutors from NTU’s MA Creative Writing course. Benefit from learning with experienced tutors who have significant experience in writing and teaching. You’ll be part of a creative writing community; one that promotes discussion and collaboration during (and hopefully after) the course. Receive portfolio advice and a certificate of attendance. With a limited class size, you'll have the one-to-one attention you need. This course is for the undecided. It’s for anyone who has undertaken creative writing in the past, whether through courses or individual exploration, who wishes to hone their skills and articulate their personal approach. On this course, you will: • complete a variety of writing projects in short fiction, poetry, screenwriting and creative non-fiction • explore new ideas and new ways of working • learn from highly regarded writers • structure your work to create impact for the reader • have fun. Level: Improver Entry requirements You should have experience of creative writing and the openness to work with tutors and support fellow attendees. Writers at all stages of their journey are welcome. What will I gain? By the end of the course, you’ll have revitalised your writing, gained confidence in your skills and have the knowledge of how to create a portfolio to share with the world. Tutor profiles Anthony Cropper is the author of three novels and the co-author, with Eve Makis, of The Accidental Memoir (2018). He has also organised many creative writing workshops in a wide range of community settings. He is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at NTU. William Ivory has an internationally-recognised career as a major writer for film, television and theatre, and has been BAFTA-nominated several times for his work. His most recent film is The Great Escaper (2023), starring Michael Caine and Glenda Jackson. He has also written for many television shows, including Minder and East-Enders. He is Senior Lecturer in Screenwriting at NTU. Eve Makis’s four novels include The Spice Box Letters (2015), which was awarded the Aurora Mardiganian Gold Medal. She has also worked as a journalist and radio presenter, and co-wrote The Accidental Memoir (2018) with Anthony Cropper. She is Senior Lecturer in Creative Writing at NTU. Rory Waterman is the author of four poetry collections from Carcanet, most recently Come Here to This Gate (2024). His work has been a Poetry Book Society Recommendation, and shortlisted for the Ledbury Forte Prize. He is Associate Professor of Creative Writing and Modern and contemporary Literature at NTU.

What's included in the price?

This course will be delivered in person on Nottingham Trent University city campus. You will be studying creative writing in a UNESCO City of Literature, and be based in the School of Arts and Humanities on the City Campus. You will find modern teaching spaces and quiet study environments to develop your ideas and writing. You’ll have access to our library to use outside of your short course; whilst you can’t reserve or take away books, you are welcome to use them as a resource for research and referencing. You’ll also be invited to join WRAP, our Writing, Reading and Pleasure programme of book groups, meet ups and talks from readers and authors. Your course fees cover the cost of studies and include great benefits such as the use of our modern library and free use of the IT equipment and software on the campus during your course. You will also need to bring with you a notebook, pen, or a laptop if you prefer writing using one. On successful completion of the course you will receive a certificate of attendance, which will further enhance your CV.
