Description

The first step towards doing DIY safely and successfully is becoming comfortable with the tools you’re using. This is an almost entirely practical course. You’ll start the day using the most basic of hand tools and work your way through to the power tools you need to own to take on simpler DIY projects around the home. Along side each process we’ll also look at which PPE you need to have for different tools and projects. Once you’re feeling relaxed with handling the tools we’ll start to apply these skills to a couple of the more common household jobs like putting up a shelf, hanging a picture or changing the barrel on a Chubb type door lock. We don’t get too caught up with decorating but we do cover how to fix any mistakes you might make along the way like filling unwanted or oversized holes and some common sense techniques that will help you keep your home looking fresh in-between refurbishments. For the beginner going into somewhere like B&Q can be overwhelming for the sheer choice of fixings, glues and paints that are available so we cover the most commonly used materials and which ones you need to buy for different projects. As well as which materials and fixings to buy we’ll also look at putting together a tool kit that will enable you to take on most jobs and what to look for when you’re buying power tools. The end goal for the day’s course is for you to feel happy to have a go when you get home so you can get started taking on some of those simpler jobs around your house rather than paying someone else too do them for you.

Since school my life has been split between the practical and the creative. I initially trained in photography and graphic design but earned most of my money in property maintainance and general building work until I was 40ish when I started making, renting and teaching people to make yurts. I had a reasonably successful business doing this for 18 years until I changed direction again to my current career, designing and making lighting and furniture from wood. I still like to teach and believe strongly that for almost everyone the path to learning a practical skill is through having a go and this is very much how my basic DIY and confidence with tools course is structured. This year I'm trying something new and I'm running some courses just for ladies.
