Half- or full-day woodturning taster with Masuma Rahim
Description
This three-hour session will introduce you to the craft of woodturning. After familiarising yourself with the lathe and tools, you will practice some of the basic cuts (roughing a piece of wood to round and making beads and coves) before making an item of your choice. This may be a vase, a candle holder, or a mallet, though other items, such as bowls, can also be chosen. I will be on hand to assist when necessary, and after sanding and finishing, your item you will go home a completed hand-turned item. Full-day sessions will allow enough time for you to make two items of your choice. About me: I am a London-based artist and woodturner. With East African and Indian heritage, I am particularly drawn to working with rare and exotic woods. All of the timber I use is sustainably sourced, and, where possible, reclaimed. Inspired by the woodturning traditions which developed in northern Africa 3,000 years ago, to my knowledge, I am the only Muslim woman woodturner working in Britain today. I work from my studio in south-east London and am available for commissions, as well as tuition.
