Description
Join me online for this one-to-one session which will be completely tailored to your carving set-up and learn a new skill in the comfort of your home! During this session you will be introduced to the basics of wood carving. Depending on the tools and the materials that you have the lesson will cover the basic aspects of using a carving knife or chisels and a mallet. For complete beginners we will spend the three hours concentrating on how the blades move in wood, i.e. rounding the edges, gouging out, scoring, shaping. For those who are comfortable with these basics, or those who have taken this class with me already, we will tackle carving a simple shape. This can be an abstract form or a figurative one, like an owl or a mushroom. In this case blocking, or roughing out the shape before carving it, will be covered too. As we carve we will discuss various types of knives, chisels and other hand tools, and the safe way to use them. We will also look at different types of cuts and how to achieve efficient results with equipment that you have. Carving wood can be as simple or as complicated as you make it. After you book your session I will be in touch to find out what carving tools and the size and type of wood you have. I will then come up with a tailored lesson plan and send it to you so you will know exactly what to expect. During the session you will be able to ask any questions you have, and I will be watching your technique to make sure you're building effective and most importantly safe carving habits. Every Thursday, either morning or evening sessions.

It depends on what tools you have and the size of your wood blank. Most people choose to carve a simple figurine such as an owl or a mushroom, but as long as your choice is simple and not too extravagant anything goes.
