Unique Copper Repoussé Class - Learn Ancient Metalworking
Description
Design and make your very own A5 or larger A4 copper panel. In this class, you will learn the practical skills needed to create a decorative panel, personalised to your own design which when displayed under double mount boards, will be ready to frame and be admired on your wall. Please start thinking/choosing a design as soon as possible which I can help prepare for the class beforehand. You'll be guided through the processes of embossing and chasing back the soft metal which after chemically ageing will be highlighted and polished. Don't worry if you're a beginner - this workshop is designed for those with a desire to create for themselves. You'll learn how to handle various materials, tools, and adhesives. The atmosphere in the studio will be warm and welcoming, with plenty of refreshments to keep you energised. (Happy to provide a pre-packed sandwich. Please let me know dietary requirements - Thank you) By the end of the workshop, you'll have not only gained new skills and confidence but also have your own unique wall art to take home. What is Repoussé? Repoussé is a generalised term for ancient metalworking techniques in which soft, malleable metals are shaped by localised pressure to create a design in relief. Many metals can be used including gold, silver and copper as well as alloys such as bronze and pewter. These techniques have been extensively used all over the world, as they require only the simplest tools and materials, and yet allow great diversity of expression. They are also relatively economical, since there is no loss or waste of metal. Toolmarks are often intentionally left visible to show the artist's hand. A few among many famous examples of repoussé and chasing are the prehistoric Gundestrup cauldron, the death mask of Tutankhamen, Bronze Age armour and even the Statue of Liberty in New York and Paris. Here in Scotland, the art form reached its peak during the Arts and Crafts movement, a reaction to the machined mass-produced. Hopefully together we can create a revival of sorts.

I've always been slightly obsessed with books... thou not the reading type, but the empty ones...the dusty old journal, them marbled edged Victorian ledgers, the ageing leather notebook or the beautiful sketch pad. A constant sketcher, i still carry around a pencil and pad, happily losing myself drawing (instead of finger tapping a smart phone). As bookmaker (I don't call myself a binder) I recently fell heavily for leather work, a new apprenticeship almost. After spending substantially more than the much talked about "10, 000 hours" on embossing (repoussé) soft metals, I felt it time for a fresh challenge. I started at the basement level and repeated what i did 24 years ago when I picked up my first sheet of metal to shape into a book cover I presented my work for sale since the beginning and in this world of the cheap/mass produced, I've realised there is still a small place for the individual, the actual unique 'one of a kind' piece. I carry no airs and graces and never over-precious about my work. I simply makes books. I’m looking forward to teaching., Kindest Regards Will Phoenix
