Description

Enjoy learning to make your own unique woven tartan. Karina will start the workshop by showing you examples of the use of contemporary and historical tartan fabrics as inspiration. Tartan is a pattern that comprises two or more solid coloured stripes that repeat in a defined sequence. Tartan fabrics are a part of our cultural heritage, from the people who wore it, to the workshops and mills who wove it. You will be guided through the weave techniques and processes in order to come away with your own tartan sample. During the class you will learn how to: - Consider texture and composition, and choose contrasting yarns from our collection of Shetland wool. - Warp up your frame loom with base stripes, and start to introduce weft yarns to create your tartan using a plain weave. - Remove your weave from the frame, learning knotting techniques for finishing neatly. This class is suitable for weavers who have completed the Weave One class, or those who have prior experience of weaving. You will come away with your own woven tartan and instruction sheets, even if you don’t manage to finish the sample in class, these will help you to continue practising your skills.
