Description

Raku art on tiles - glazing, design, pattern, and firing. Come and enjoy the design, glazing, and firing of ceramic tiles through the Japanese art of Raku. Since its 16th century beginnings, this rapid kiln firing process inevitably brings excitement and suspense. This workshop will offer a choice of handmade tiles, square or rectangle, with impressions, textures, or flat plain surfaces, bringing plenty of scope for your creativity. You could, for example, create a group, or set of tiles. Otherwise, they could also be used as coasters. You’ll be guided through different approaches from freestyle glazing to creating a more structured design, with options to use resist techniques. The range of glazes brings deep, rich colours and earthy tones to your tiles, finally to be revealed at the end of each Raku firing, (after which you’ll have suggestions/options on how to mount them). Workshop leader Andy Mason has developed his technical skills and knowledge over many years, sharing his enthusiasm and insight into the ancient rituals and contemporary practice of Raku, and its further practical application. Introduction to Intermediate level. No previous experience required, just an interest and willingness to participate, and soak up the energy, art, and alchemy of Raku! Three (biscuit fired) pots provided for each participant.
