Description
As a child in Salford, I joined an art class taught by Harold Riley, a friend of L. S. Lowry. Although I later studied art in Leicester and London, I didn’t quite fit into the art world at that time. I switched to psychology, became a Forensic Psychologist, then a business psychologist, and eventually lectured in leadership at Worcester University. Retirement allowed me to return to my passion for art. Recently, two of my portraits were accepted by the Royal Birmingham Society of Arts for their summer exhibitions. This course aims to help you draw and paint convincing portraits. Drawing portraits is about careful scrutiny and converting what you see into marks with pencil, charcoal, pastel, or paint and creating something authentic. Each session begins with exercises to limber up before drawing or painting from photos or a sitter. You will learn: • Basic anatomy of the face • Line drawing and shading techniques • Proportions and measurements • Light and shadow: rendering three-dimensional form • Capturing facial expressions and emotions • Composition and layout • Painting in acrylics: brushes, palettes, and other tools • Colour theory and mixing skin tones • Step-by-step portrait painting Enjoy the process and the course!
