Learn to make pleated lampshades - a day of bespoke tuition to master core skills. A pleated lampshade is super smart and offers glorious impact when lit. Just like the more informal gathered shade, these are gorgeous in block printed fabrics, cotton lawns, sheeny silk dupion... and there’s plenty of scope for your own unique ideas too. Book a day of one-to-one tuition with an expert lampshade tutor – Joanna, Mel or Naomi – in the sewing room at Traditional Upholstery School. You’ll be taught all the core skills, from how to plan and measure the fabric, to hand stitching the pleats in place, all while making a shade covered in your own fabric. Skills include fitting an informal pleated or a balloon lining, and a making smart bias trim. Every stage is taught step by step to a professional standard and at your own pace. At the end of an enjoyable and rewarding day you will take home your own beautiful lampshade and the skills to make many more. This day is suitable for beginners and sew-ers alike. • A 10in French drum lampshade frame, which is the optimum size and shape for learning on. • Binding tape and suitable cotton linings in shades of white. • Pins, scissors and all the specialist sundries. • Sewing machines. • Tea, coffee, cold drinks and snacks are provided throughout the day.

The Traditional Upholstery School is based in lovely, roomy workrooms near Bradford on Avon in rural Wiltshire. It offers a range of professional upholstery and lampshade making skills workshops. It was founded by Joanna Heptinstall, author of 'Sewing Lampshades'. Traditional Upholstery School is one of Britain's few training centres delivering AMUSF accredited training.
