Naalbinding demo & meet the tutor (short video with introduction)
Description
A close-up demonstration of naalbinding in action, with an introduction from the tutor behind this profile. This means you can see how stitches are formed during the process, jumping straight into the action. You'll also be able to get a good idea of whether you're likely to get on with my teaching style, should you decide to learn to naalbind with me.

FAQs
It's a needle - and it can be made of wood, bone, antler, iron.... as long as it's chunky enough to have a good size eye, and the pointy end isn't too sharp.
Usually a sock. My "on display" projects so far have been my own stockings, which in the 10th century would have been over-the-knee, so they've taken me a while!
Once they're finished, I shall move on to a hat or mittens. These sorts of smaller garments are ideal for naalbinding, as the fabric created is water resistant (when you're working with wool).
Yes, it is.
Naalbinding stitches are not the simplest. In fact the first time I tried it I thought, "this would be much easier with a hook on the end of a stick" and I'm not even much of a crocheter!
Naalbinding pre-dates knitting and crochet, so as a race we hadn't perfected the KISS principle (keep it simple, stupid). However we HAD perfected a method of getting an extremely strong, durable, weatherproof, beautifully textured and skin-friendly fabric out of our yards and yards of spun fleece.
