Metal Casting Workshop ~ Join us for a dynamic three-day Metal Casting Workshop in our Birmingham-based studio, where you’ll bring your sculptures to life through the transformative process of bronze casting! This workshop is part 3 of a 4-part series, guiding you step-by-step from sculpting to the final polishing of your bronze masterpiece. When: Monday to Wednesday Duration: 9:00AM – 4:00PM each day Throughout these three consecutive days, you will gain hands-on experience in the art of metal casting. Here’s what you can expect: Day 1: Foundry Day ~ Kick off your workshop with an immersive day in the foundry! You’ll learn how to effectively burn out the wax from your ceramic shell investment and understand the crucial process of pre-heating and vitrifying your investment. Discover how to operate a gas-powered furnace and smelt bronze, gaining insight into the operations of a sculpture foundry. The highlight of Day 1 will be pouring your own sculpture as you collaborate with fellow participants to burn out, preheat, smelt, and pour your hollow bronze pieces. Day 2: Breaking Open the Shell ~ On the second day, dive into the exciting process of unveiling your sculpture. You’ll learn how to correctly break open your ceramic shell investment and cut off the running and rising systems, revealing your beautifully cast bronze piece. This session is all about careful handling and technique as you prepare for the finishing touches. Day 3: Finishing Your Sculpture ~ Conclude your workshop by mastering the art of cleaning and finishing your bronze sculpture. You’ll learn how to use metalworking tools to clean up your piece, including the basics of Tig welding. Followed by techniques for polishing, applying patina, and sealing your sculpture to ensure it shines for years to come. What You’ll Learn: Proper techniques for burning out wax and pre-heating ceramic shell investment Operation of a gas-powered furnace and bronze smelting Understanding the processes of a sculpture foundry Safe breaking open of the ceramic shell investment Cleaning and finishing your bronze sculpture using metalworking tools How to use and operate a tig welding machine to weld your bronze sculpture Techniques for polishing, applying patina, and sealing your bronze piece
