The art of lapidary encapsulates many skills from sawing to shaping drilling and polishing of both precious and semi precious gem stones We are a workshop that teaches gem stone cutting by hand, not machine! You will be taught all aspects of gem stone cutting, polishing and how to use the equipment. Learn how to cut and polish precious and semi precious gem stones in there many different forms from cabochons to faceted gemstones. Sawing tuition Learn with us how to dissect rough gem stone. Lab grown or man made gem material is easy to saw. Until you find imperfections this can comprise a flaw or colour patch. Then you arrive at natural gem stone material which can also have colour patches and flaws. We will teach you how to cut the flaws out and keep the colour to enhance natural gem material. Drilling tuition Learn with us how to drill gem stones with a tube drill. Most drilling that’s under taken on gem stones is with a diamond burr which can only drill a few millimetres with a tube drill you can drill as deeper hole as you require. A example if you drill a drop shape stone with a hole in the top and glue it to a mount eventually the glue will dry or crack and the stone will fall off. If you tube drill the stone through its sides Ie from left to right you will create what we describe as a horse shoe shaped drill hole. Cabochon tuition Cabochon form of cutting is the earliest form of gem stone fashioning and the simplest. A day’s tuition in the gemstone discipline of your choice. We will give you a rough piece of white topaz which you can chose from our tub of white topaz or other semi precious rough gem stone or a piece of synthetic sapphire or bring along your own material this can be precious or semi precious gem stone or a stone from the beach or garden. The use of our equipment in the workshop and the tuition on how to use it. Well supply all the cutting and polishing powders you will need to use to cut and polish your stone. We will even switch the kettle on and make you a cup of tea or coffee. Chris’s special skill is the drilling of horse shoe shaped tube holes in gem stones. Louise has been at Salamander gems for fifteen years. One Rainey autumn day fifteen years ago Louise happened to visit salamander gems to enquire about beading classes which at the time salamander gems hoisted along with the lapidary gem stone cutting workshop. On visiting salamander gems Louise found the cutting and polishing of gem stones a lot more interesting than beading and has been cutting and polishing gem stones for the last fifteen years. Louise’s special skill is the polishing and healing of badly flawed cabochon gem stones. Kevin has been cutting and polishing gem stones for over 40 years. And has won awards for his gem stone cutting and polishing at the gold Smiths hall in London. Kevin also assembles the equipment used at salamander gems.
