Description

During this beginner/intermediate friendly workshop you will learn how to create a patchwork table runner using a version of the ‘Sawtooth Star’ block. A four block table runner will be approximately 14x56inches or 36x142cm. This course will run over 4 weeks. You will learn: How to plan a patchwork design How to mark fabric for cutting How to pin fabrics for use on the sewing machine How to create a patchwork block using a pattern called ‘Sawtooth Star’ How to join patchwork blocks How to create a quilt ‘sandwich’ How to straight line machine quilt How to create a fabric border While help will always be on hand, it would be beneficial if you knew how to thread your machine including re-filling your bobbin (bottom thread). It is also advised that you have attempted some straight line stitching prior to the session as this patchwork block will require a degree of precision in this to achieve the star shape. You will require: Your own sewing machine (with spare needle and instruction manual if possible) Cotton fabric - a list of materials required will be sent upon booking but as a rough guide 4-6 fat quarters and 1.5m-2m of base and backing fabric as well as a length of wadding will be needed for this project Thread - a colour that blends with your base fabric is recommended Fabric marker - this can be a fabric pen/pencil or tailors chalk or for this project a fine liner pen will work absolutely fine (Tip: I use a Pilot Frixion pen as this heat erases)* Ruler* Scissors* Pins* * These items can be loaned no problem at all. StitchwithKate has been a dream of mine for a number of years. Over the 2020 lockdown I was able to put more time into sewing and as a result I began to tentatively share, through local artisan markets, sewn items that I had made. 3 years further down the line and this idea has progressed and I have decided that the time has come to make sewing more than just a hobby of mine! As a result, I have become a part time teacher and am now working hard to establish StitchwithKate as a business. The vision is that of teaching people to sew. I am a teacher through and through but with a passion for sewing that I would love to share. I believe that absolutely ANYONE who wants to learn to sew CAN. I have had children as young as two effectively using a needle and the results are both heart warming and empowering. Too many times I have heard the phrases; “I can’t sew.” “I have a sewing machine but no idea how to use it.” “I don’t have the patience for that.” and my favourite… “Kate, can you sew this button back on for me?” The answer to the latter; “No, I can’t, but I can teach you how to do it!” I have created an ever expanding mix of instructed kits and in person workshops to help me achieve my goal. You can find these here and over on my website. For insights into what is up and coming why not visit my Instagram page StitchwithKate2. I am also able to offer bespoke workshops to groups so if you are, for example, in Scouting or Guiding, a member of the WI, a school seeking curriculum enrichment or an individual looking for a unique party experience for a special occasion please do get in touch. Sewing is both mindful and creative in nature and I hope as a result that you will become as enchanted as I am by the humble sewing needle. Happy stitching, Kate
