Stone Carving Experience - Carving Heart / Flower / Star - Stone Masonry - Blended Monkey

This one day workshop with our guest stone mason, Mark Evans, will offer a simple introduction to stone as a material and to the hand tools used in carving. Mark will teach students how to set out an achievable design based on an animal, mineral or vegetable theme (heart, star or flower) and cut a relief carving on an approx. 10-inch square piece of Portland limestone using a traditional dummy hammer and stone carving chisels. Not only a hands on experience but one that might offer a fresh way of looking at stone work in cathedral, historic buildings and even in the high street. This STONE CARVING - CREATING A HEART, FLOWER or STAR workshop is held in a dedicated covered, outside space in the peaceful setting of our Blended Monkey studios in the cottage gardens of our home on the Cambs/Norfolk border. This experience can be enjoyed by a group of up to 6 people and you'll take away everything you make during the session. The stone carving workshops are suitable for everyone (14+ accompanied by an adult). There is a degree of arm strength and the ability to stand for periods of time required. About a week before your workshop date, we'll e-mail you again with more details about parking etc. We also offer accommodation in the form of our Crafter's Retreat cabin subject to availability or we can advise other local B&Bs. What's included in the price?

Refreshments will be provided throughout the day, and a light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch is also included - tailored to meet all dietary requirements. Depending on the weather/time of year, lunch can be taken either out in the cottage garden or in our country kitchen which has a view over the garden. The sessions are hands-on, and the student will be able to use the stone masonry equipment on the day & learn how to carve in Portland stone. The aim is to make an item that they can feel proud of and take away with them. All students will be provided with a certificate of completion. The 1-day workshop includes: - Use of all tools - Materials - Provision of personal eye protection equipment - Refreshments (tea/coffee/soft drinks) - A light, rustic farmhouse-style lunch - catering to all dietary requirements - As we limit the number of people to 6, you get to have some 1-2-1 tuition and the maximum benefit from a day with no distractions - All work can be taken home - Certificate of completion - Please wear sturdy footwear and clothes that you don't mind getting stone dust on

Blended Monkey is a husband and wife team. Our studios are based in a small village on the Norfolk/Cambridgeshire border. Our setting provides ample inspiration for our work, and is perfect for our woodturning & pottery courses. Louise (ceramicist) - I studied at the Falmouth School of Art & Design and I am interested in various art forms, design and applied arts. Simon (woodturner) - I love working with wood & exploring its versatility. I'm a member of the AWGB and APTGW.
